“Hot Topics in Medical Ethics for 2019”

Learning Objectives:

  1. Define the terms: ethics and bioethics.
  2. Distinguish between ethics, morality, and case management (CM) legal obligations as stated in CCMC principle #7: Board-Certified CMs will obey all laws and regulations.
  3. Define ethical conflict.
  4. Identify and understand principles relevant to both bioethics and board certified case managers.
    1. Bioethics: autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, justice
    2. Board Certified CMS: Principle 1- Place public interest above their own; principle 2-respect the rights and inherent dignity of all clients, and Principle 4- act with integrity and fidelity
  5. Identify techniques to maintain objectivity in ethical deliberations and in relationships with clients (Principle 3).
  6. Identify and discuss at least four ethical issues that are trending in healthcare settings for 2019.
    1. Ethics committees and the ethics consult process. Vulnerable populations and ethics
  7. Psychiatric and neurological issues in ethics. Aid in Dying.   e. Moral Distress
  8. g.  Gun violence.  g.  Clinical ethics and technology

Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider #CEP 15522, for 1.0 contact hour and has been pre-approved by The Commission for Case Manager Certification to provide Ethics continuing education credit to CCM® board certified case managers.
